KOALA NIGHT SUCCESS

Organised by the Yarram Yarram Landcare Network, over 60 people braved a cold night on Wednesday 13th June to come and learn about the unique Strzelecki Koala at the Alberton West Recreation Reserve. Over a pizza supper, the speakers covered a wide variety of topics including: koala habitats and behaviours, threats to the koala, current research into the numbers and spatial distribution of the koala, what is currently being done to protect the unique Strzelecki Koala and how you can help protect the koala. Guest speakers included: author and well known scientist Peter Menkhorst, researcher Dr Fiona Hogan (Monash University), wildlife carer/rescuer Colleen Wood (Southern Ash Wildlife Rescue) and local expert Richard Appleton (HVP Stewardship Forester). There was also a special guest appearance from FOSKY the Koala, who drew the door prize and provided some fun for the kids (+ adults).Thank-you to all speakers for supporting the night and donating their time and expertise. Door prizes, including the major prize, a signed copy of the book, A Field Guide to Mammals of Australia (Peter Menkhorst & Frank Knight) were drawn. Congratulations to a local Stacey’s Bridge dairy farmer on his win. Special thanks to HVP Plantations for supporting the night and the Binginwarri Landcare Group for helping organise the night. Also special thanks to the South Gippsland Landcare Network for attending the night and brining FOSKY the Koala.
